Rice (அரிசி) upma Upma recipe – Step by step recipe with video to make fluffy, non-sticky & good south Indian rava Upma is made by simply cooking dry roasted wheat semolina (rava) in water that is tempered with. Rice sevai upma is a flavorful upma and goes as a nice breakfast. Akki Shavige Uppittu is a delicious upma variety made with rice vermicelli or rice seviyan or akki shavige. You can cook Rice (அரிசி) upma using 16 ingredients and 6 steps. Here is how you achieve it.

Ingredients of Rice (அரிசி) upma

  1. It’s 1 cup of is 250gms.
  2. You need 1 cup of white rice.
  3. Prepare 1 cup of toor dal (yellow).
  4. It’s 2 tablespoons of cumin seeds.
  5. You need 2 tablespoons of black peppercorns.
  6. It’s as needed of Salt.
  7. You need 5 of Dry red chillies.
  8. You need 2 teaspoons of black mustard.
  9. You need 1 sprig of curry leaves.
  10. Prepare 1/4 teaspoon of hing/asafoetida.
  11. Prepare 1 tablespoon of chana dal.
  12. It’s 1 tablespoon of white urad dal.
  13. It’s of Oil.
  14. Prepare 2 tablespoons of coconut oil.
  15. You need 2 tablespoons of sesame oil.
  16. Prepare 2 tablespoons of sunflower oil.

Grind the rice, black pepper and cumin seeds into a course mixture. Stir continuously until the mixture thickens and the rice is cooked. Simmer for sometime keeping the pan closed. Arisi Upma is made using Raw rice, toor dal, pepper along with tempering ingredients.

Rice (அரிசி) upma step by step

  1. Measure 1 cup rice and 1 cup toor dal. Grind it coarsely. To ensure additional fragrance in the recipe, you can also dry roast the rice and dal in low flame and grind it..
  2. In the mix, throw in 3 red chillies, 1/2 sprig curry leaves, cumin seeds, black peppercorns and grind them all just for 10 seconds..
  3. Now in a heavy bottom pan; preferably steel, add in all the oils in the said quantity. Throw in mustard seeds, chana dal, urad dal, 1/2 sprig curry leaves, asafoetida, 2 red chillies. Sauté them in low flame till they turn fragrant..
  4. Then, add in 4 cups of water – preferably hot to speed up the cooking. Cover it and let the water reach a roller boil. Once it does, lower your flame to minimum; add in the salt as preferred and gently mix in the powder to the water. Make sure to stay careful as a few drops of water may splash around..
  5. Once the powder is mixed in keep stirring for a minute. Then cover and let it cook for 7 minutes in the lowest mark. Open and add water if needed. Else, give it a couple of stirs and take it off stove. It is now ready to serve..
  6. Notes: Rice brings carbs. Dals provide body building protein. Oils bring in fat. Cumin seeds help maintain body temperature while pepper, curry leaves, asafoetida and mustard help digestion. This is a wholesome meal. It can be consumed as such or with a side of chuney and sambar or; with plain whole yoghurt..

The rice and dal are first pounded to rava like coarse powder along with peppercorns. I have been experiencing some serious server issues with regard to my blog these past few days. Arisi Upma, a simple tiffin prepared with rice, toor dal, spiced up with cumin seeds, pepper and red chilies and tempered in coconut oil with the hint of grated coconut.
